 Guy would consider the question whether we could have come to know Fermat’s theorem by accepting the testimony he left in the form of marginalia. On the face of it, the answer is simple and obvious: we couldn’t have. However, he would suggest some reasons for thinking that the answer is not quite so straightforward.
